Visual Culture Study

Creating a Self Portrait

The idea I’ve chosen to explore is the best way to incorporate visual culture in current art education curriculum. While I don’t fully believe in Visual Culture Art Education, or VCAE, I do believe the subject of visual culture has been begging to be explored with art education. As an artist, I find the fundamental concept of visual culture innate to art and the need for it to be studied in that context.
The work that I’ve created are six paintings of images that I believe have had a strong impact on the person who I am today. Collectively they make a self portrait. Some of the imagery is more personal while others are more political, but they have each shaped who I am in some way. My hope is that viewers will consider these images, and reflect on images that they feel just as strongly have influenced who they are. Intentionally or not, this should lead my audience to explore the visual culture in which we live.
