This is a look at my artistic development over almost a decade. It is work from and since undergrad, where I was a studio major concentrating in photography and fiber. Before reaching college, I was always a drawer. I have drawn anything and everything since I can remember, and in almost every medium available. I painted a fair amount as well, but neither they nor my drawings are included in this overview as I don't believe I was truly using art as a means of expression as accurately before college. I will admit that between my undergrad and graduate studies I let my artist self get a little dusty, but studio time I've had in graduate school helped to re-awaken the artist that has always been there, and I continue to make art on the side of school and work. Expression has always been important to me, and here I am highlighting works that I believe best represent that.

Relaying My Artistic Development

Fiber Work

My focus in fiber was silk painting, but I did not reach that decision early on. So included in this collection is the first felt that I made; it was after that process, the beauty of taking plain white wool and transforming it into my own piece of artwork, that had me hooked. Silk painting became attractive to me because of it's soft beauty, and that is how I used it. In here you see two series, one, Memories of Italy and the second, Flowers of Sympathy.

Photography

Photography became a medium of interest to me because it was an immediate way to capture anything I wanted to see. The majority of these photographs are from a Study Abroad session I did in Italy. Generally, my photography deals with nature or architecture, but I have included a series, Being Domestic, which is a satirical look at the idea of modern Suzy Homemaker.

Watercolor & Mixed Mediums

This is a collection of my most current work, including works from two books that were done during my graduate studio, To Marry a Man or a Morning Glory? and Stages... of Letting Go. I used a lot of watercolor for those books and I became really inspired to continue exploring that medium because it speaks to me in the same way that silk painting does. There are also a couple of pieces here from a series I am currently working on called Morning Glory.
